Ti ho aspettato per una lunga, lunga notte
Di fresco desiderio che arde nelle squillanti lotte
Come canti e intrecci di argentine voci
Tra incantate valli si stendono in sentieri e incroci.
Poiché se strappa il velo al giorno questa fluida sera
Che al calar del sole già non spera
Di una coltre nera e lunga ricopre e scuro effonde
Note dure e secche in boschi perse tra chiome e fronde.
Dacci di visioni distese e dolci sorti
Di battaglie siamo spesso avvinti e morti
Di quel che ai terreni sforzi riserva il giorno
Per il vagar tra i mari delle genti intorno
Che si rinfrescan al prodigio del tributo incanto
Come per generare speme, stupore effuso e spanto.
Che se ci accogli tutti senza chiedere e mutare
Se ci lasci liberi di vivere e giocare
Se bussi alle altrui porte e attendi che ti aprano
Senza irromper di violenza, dietro nubi che ti coprano
Se stai al gioco del diverso e sai perdere ogni tanto
Questo sarà il tuo sogno Americano e santo.

I had been waiting for you a long, long night
Fresh burning wish as in the shrill fight
As singing and twisting of so argentine tones
Thru amazing valleys loosen within roads that cross
Whether this flowing evening would tear the daily mask
That leaves no hope when the sun’s swallowed into dusk
Covering with a long black layer of dark around
Dried harshly notes amiss on brush woods and ground
Give us of kind flat visions and tender lot fated
By battles we are used to go tied up and bated
To the earthly efforts delivers any day that’s giving
For the peoples roam over the seas they are leaving
That they cool down at the marvel of the duty draw
Surprise spread out and cast so that to grow
So hail us all, no change for us ever plead
If you give us to be alive, enjoying and freed
If you knock upon the doors and wait for they unlock
By no breaking violence, behind coverings of smoke
If you can play the diverse and beat now and then, as you deem
This will be your very American holy dream
